IHL Workshop Closing Ceremony

A three day Advanced Workshop on International Humanitarian Law for the members of the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka, which commenced on 23rd of June 2014, at the Mini Theatre, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), was concluded on 25th of June 2014. It was collaborative effort by the Faculty of Law, KDU and the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Colombo.

The main objective of this workshop was to give the participants who were already inculcated with a basic knowledge of different aspects of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), an opportunity to update themselves on the current trends and latest developments of law. It is expected that this workshop would assist the trainers in the Armed Forces to disseminate the knowledge that they gained through the training to their subordinates. Brigadier Lloyd Gillett, the Regional Armed and Security Forces Delegate of the ICRC was the resource person who conducted the workshop.

General Jagath Jayasuriya, Chief of Defence Staff was the Chief Guest of the Certificate Awarding Ceremony. Ms. Cherine Pollini, Head, ICRC Delegation, Colombo, Vice Chancellor Major General Milinda Peiris, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence and Administration) Brigadier Lal Gunasekara, Mr. Channa Jayawardena, Comunication Officer, ICRC, members of academic staff, Faculty of Law and other military officers graced the occasion.
