As part of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University’s (KDU) university-wide celebrations for World Environment Day 2025, the Faculty of Law undertook a community-based tree planting initiative.
As part of the initiative, fruit-bearing saplings were planted along the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Cross Streets adjacent to the university, while additional saplings were distributed among members of the local community—ensuring the spirit of environmental responsibility extended well beyond campus, in line with the wider university collaboration with LAUGFS Eco Sri Ltd and supported by Clean Sri Lanka.
The saplings included Ceylon olive, Mango, Guava, Maadan, Starfruit, Rambutan, Cashew Apple, Uguressa, and Lovi–species selected for their ecological value and cultural relevance. The planting was carried out with the participation of the Dean (acting) of the Faculty of Law, academic and non-academic staff, and a few student members of the Environmental Assistance Research and Training Hub of the Faculty of Law, KDU (KDU-EARTH) from Intakes 39 and 40.
This initiative formed a part of the larger tree planting campaign launched by KDU following the official Environment Day proceedings held at the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) Auditorium, which brought together national policymakers, industry leaders, and the academic community. The campaign, implemented across multiple faculties and sites, reflects the university’s integrated approach to environmental stewardship.
By contributing to this effort, the Faculty of Law affirms KDU’s broader commitment to its institutional responsibilities towards the local community, the natural environment, and the future of the planet.
