Certificate Award Ceremony – Advanced Seminar on International Humanitarian Law

A three day Advanced Seminar on International Humanitarian Law for the members of the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka was held from 7th to 9th of June 2016, at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) as a collaborative effort by the Faculty of Law, KDU and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Colombo.


The main objective of this workshop was to give the participants who were already inculcated with a basic knowledge of different aspects of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), an opportunity to update themselves on the current trends and latest developments of law. It is expected that this workshop would assist the trainers in the Armed Forces to disseminate the knowledge they gained through the training to their subordinates. Brigadier Lloyd Gillett, the Regional Armed and Security Forces Delegate of the ICRC was the resource person who conducted the workshop.


Deputy vice chancellor, Defence and Administration, Major General Ruwan Kulatunga graced the Inaugural Ceremony as the Chief Guest. The Chief Guest of the certificate awarding ceremony was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor MHJ Ariyaratne, Regional Armed and Security Forces Delegate of the ICRC, Brigadier Lloyd Gillett, Dean of the Faculty of Law Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe, Communication Officer, ICRC, Mr. Channa Jayawardena, academic and administrative staff of Faculty of Law, and other military officers graced the occasions.
