The Legal Aid Centre of the Faculty of Law, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), successfully hosted a Guest Lecture on the 23rd of April 2025, with the participation of second-year undergraduates of the faculty. The session was aimed at equipping law undergraduates with both theoretical foundations and practical aspects of international dispute settlement.
The Guest Speaker was Mr. Mohan Peiris, PC, former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka and a prominent legal professional.
In his address, Mohan Peiris PC gave valuable insights into the mechanisms available for resolving conflicts in the international legal order. The lecture highlighted the distinct roles of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC). Emphasis was placed on the importance of peaceful dispute resolution, the challenges of enforcement and state cooperation and the evolving role of these institutions in addressing contemporary global issues. The session enriched student’s understanding of international legal processes and their significance in promoting justice, accountability and the rule of law globally.
