Inaugural Ceremony of the Advanced Seminar on International Humanitarian Law

A three day Advanced Seminar on International Humanitarian Law for the members of the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka was inaugurated today, 4th of November 2015 at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), Ratmalana for the 6th consecutive time. It is a collaborative effort by the Faculty of Law of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Colombo.

         The main objective of this Seminar is to give the participants who are already inculcated with a basic knowledge of different aspects of International Humanitarian Law, an opportunity to update them selves on the current trends and latest developments of the Law. It is expected that this Seminar would assist the Trainers in the Armed Forces to disseminate the knowledge that they gain through the Seminar to their subordinates.

            The Australian High Commissioner HE Robyn Mudie was the Chief Guest of the Seminar. In her speech she confirmed that Australia was very proud to be able to work with Sri Lanka as a partner in the important endeavor of promoting the strong application of International Humanitarian Law Standards wherever and whenever they applied.

Brigadier Lloyd Gillett, ICRC’s Regional Delegate to the Armed and Security Forces is the resource person of the Seminar. Vice Chancellor Major General Milinda Peiris, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence and Administration) Major General Ruwan Kulatunga, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Thilak Weerasooriyamembers of the academia of the KDU and other military officers, and Mr.Channa Jayawardena, the Communications Officer of the ICRC graced the occasion.
