General Sir John Kotelawala Memorial Moot Court Competition – 2024
General Sir John Kotelawala Memorial Moot Court Competition organized by the Moot Court and Debating Society of the Faculty of Law, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (MCDS-KDU) was held on the 20th, 21st and 26th of April 2024. This is the only local moot court competition focusing on Domestic Criminal Justice System of Sri Lanka aiming to provide a platform for enthusiastic Law Students from all Law Schools in the country to sharpen their advocacy skills and an opportunity to explore the intricacies of the domestic legal system.
Preliminary and Semi-Final Rounds of the Competition took place on a virtual platform, while the two outstanding teams that made it to the Finals, were hosted at the FGS Auditorium. The result of several months’ efforts by the Society, the Competition involved participants from many Law Schools in Sri Lanka, including those from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, University of Colombo, University of Jaffna, Open University of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Law College, Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT), Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) and National School of Business Management (NSBM )
Over thirty competitors put up a spirited battle for the Championship, with the team from University of Cololmbo ultimately emerging as Champions in the Oral Rounds with the team from APIIT Kandy emerging as Runner-up of the Competition. Ms. Ridha Tharik from APITT Kandy received the Award for the Best Oralist while Lakshadi Navodya from University of Jaffna received the Award for Best Oralist Runner-up. The team C KDU received the Spirit of the Moot Award. Team B KDU secured the Award for the Best Memorandum-Appellant and the Team B from University of Jaffna secured the Award for the Best Memorandum-Respondent
Mrs. Shirani Thilakwardane, former Supreme Court Judge, Mr. Shanaka Wijesinghe PC, Additional Solisitor General, Attorney General’s Department and Mr. Janaka Bandara, Deputy Solicitor General, Attorney General’s Department adjudicated the Final Round of the Competition.
Vice Chancellor of KDU Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara, VSV, USP, psc, MMaritime Pol, Bsc was the Chief Guest of the awarding ceremony. Other distinguished guests Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe Esq. Dean, Faculty of Law, KDU, Prof. Sampath Punchihewa, Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, Lt Col KTDS Kalansooriya, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies, Prof. Jeewa Niriella, Dean, Faculty of Criminal Justice also graced this event.
During the course of the event the e-version of the Issue I, Volume 4 of the KDU Law Journal was released by the Vice Chancellor. A copy of the printed version of the Journal was handed over to the Vice Chancellor by the Dean, Faculty of Law.
KDU Mooters Exhibit their Excellence Internationally
A team comprising Dinara Abeyawickrema, Kaif Sally and Binthi Perera of the Faculty of Law of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) became the “Runners-Up” at the “Lex Infinitum” International Dispute Resolution Competition organized by V.M. Salgaocar College of Law held in Goa, India from 19th of January to 23rd of January.
Competing against 24 international participants, KDU team was selected to the Final Round with a team from the National University of Singapore. In the Preliminary Round, KDU team won the award for the “Best Negotiation Team”. This achievement by the KDU team is a great inspiration for the upcoming 19th ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition to be held in Paris, France from 21st of February to 26th.
The Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Law and the University Administration of KDU congratulated the Moot Team of KDU for their significant achievements made in the recent past.
Award Ceremony of Inter Faculty Debating Championship for Vice Chancellor’s Trophy
The Inter-Faculty Debating Championship for Vice Chancellor’s Trophy remains a significant event of the activity calendar of the Moot Court and Debating Society of the Faculty of Law, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.
The Awarding Ceremony of the said Championship-2023 was held on the 01.01,2024 in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Auditorium under the patronage of the Vice Chancellor of KDU, Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara, VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS).
The team from the Faculty of Law clinched the Championship while the team from the Faculty of Computing emerged the Runners-Up. Mr. Chandrika Manamendra from the Faculty of Law was awarded Trophy for the Best Debater.
An alumnus and past debater from the Faculty of Law, Ms. Ruvini Ahangangoda, Attorney-at-Law, participated in the event as a guest speaker, and her inspiring speech highlighted how involving in mooting and debating during the undergraduate days at the KDU sharpened her skills to become a successful lawyer.
The Chief Guest of the event, the Vice Chancellor congratulated both the teams in his address and mentioned a special reference to the recent successes achieved by the Moot Court and Debating Society of KDU both locally and internationally
KDU Mooters Snatch both Championship and Runners-Up Trophies of the Constitutional Law Moot organized by the University of Colombo, 2023
The Moot Team of the Faculty of Law, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University comprising of Mr. Chandrika Manamendra, Mr. Kaif Sally, Ms. Dinara Abeyewikrema and Ms. Sidrah Yoosuf became the Champions at the Constitutional Law Moot organized by the Department of Public and International Law of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. Team B from KDU gained Runners Up Trophy in the same competition making the history of Sri Lankan university mooting as this was first time that two teams from the same institute emerged both Champions and Runners- Up Trophies. Both teams had the distinction of winning the following awards.

The Final Round of the Moot was judged by an esteemed panel of jurists namely Justice Yasantha Kodagoda PC, Justice Janka de Silva PC, Justice A.H.M.D NawazPC, Justice S. Thurairaja all judges of the Supreme Court, Justice Bandula Karunarathne, President of the Court of Appeal, Dr. Jayampathi Wickremarathne PC and Dr. Mario Gomez.
The Vice Chancellor and the University Administration take immense pride in congratulating the KDU Moot Team for its great victory.
KDU Mooters Soar High by Clinching the Henry Dunant Moot Court Championship, 2023
The Moot Team representing the Faculty of Law of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University comprising Mr. Chandrika Manamendra, Mr. Ashan De Alwis and Ms. Devmini Bandara emerged as the Champions of the National Rounds of the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition 2023 on International Humanitarian Law which was organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo and the International Committee of the Red Cross. Mr. Chandrika Manamendra also won the Award for the Best Speaker at the Competition by adding more glamour to the KDU victory.
The Final Round of the Competition was held on the 26.10.2023 at the Senate Hall of the University of Colombo. The KDU team defeated the Colombo University team making their submissions before an esteemed panel of judges headed by Dr. Mario Gomez, the Executive Director of (ICES), Colombo. The KDU team will now represent Sri Lanka at the Regional Rounds of the Competition which will be held next year in New Delhi, India. Henry Dunant Moot Court Competition is an annual event facilitated by International Committee of Red Cross with the aim of promoting International Humanitarian Law among the law students.

General Sir John Kotelawala Memorial Moot Court Competition organized by the Moot Court and Debating Society of the Faculty of Law, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (MCDS-KDU) was held on the 13th, 14th and 16th of March 2023. This is the only local moot court competition focusing on Sri Lanka’s Domestic Criminal Justice System, aiming to provide a platform for enthusiastic Law Students from all Law Schools in the country to sharpen their advocacy skills and an opportunity to explore the intricacies of the domestic legal system.
MCB National Commercial Mediation Competition 2023
Having successfully completed the assessment in Phase One of The Moot Court Bench, International Commercial Mediation Programme 2023, Kaif Sally and Rajindh Gooneratne of the Faculty of Law, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University represented the university a the National Rounds of the MCB National Commercial Mediation Competition 2023 and emerged Champions in the Competition.
They are now qualified to represent the University at the International Rounds of the Competition held in Paris in 2024, where they would compete against many undergraduates from across the globe.
